Fire in Zinc Mine Endangers Miners' Lives

Posted: Updated:
Knoxville, TN -

Three miners were in jeopardy after a fire broke out at a zinc mine near Knoxville. It happened at the Young mine in New Market. Fifty-four miners were underground when the fire started and 51 got out safely. The three trapped miners were cornered by smoke, but did make it to a safe room. They were rescued after several hours. Nyrstar, the company that owns that mine, trained a local man. Mark Brandt works as a contractor and has been inside other zinc mines, similar to the one where fire broke out. Officials say that fire started on a drill rig about 800 feet below the ground.
