Hospital Shooter is Behind Bars

Posted: Updated:

A Chattanooga man is behind bars tonight, after he shot his wife and her mother in the I-C-U of a local hospital. 59-year old James Benson turned himself in to police Friday night.  Police tell us an argument broke out in the I-C-U at the Erlanger at Hutcheson Hospital and Benson was asked to leave. They say he then went out to his car, got his gun, then came back in the hospital. That's where he shot his wife 56-year old Mary Benson and mother-in-law 77-year old Charlotte Johnson. Benson is now being held at the Walker County Jail. Saturday, he was formally charged with two counts of murder.  Hospital officials say they've brought in security guards from the main Erlanger campus.  They're meeting on Monday to re-evaluate their security plan.
